Aurora

You need to LOGIN to send your report!

Aurora is a phenomena which is most prevalent in the regions close to the so called "Aurora Belt". Depending on where you live in the world this belt may be southern Canada or the northern part of the Nordic countries. In these areas Aurora will occur a dozen times a year, even in the quiet periods of the Solar Cycle. If you live more to the south, like in Central Europe, years may pass with little or no Aurora openings.
Finally, after a very long solar minimum, our neighbouring star has been showing activity since early 2010. Sunspots have been appearing again, but thus far there have been no major Aurora openings. However, we are interested to have infos about ANY Aurora opening occurring in the European area (other parts of the Northen and Southern hemisphere may be added later, depending on Ham and Solar activity). So if you make any Aurora QSOs on 2 metre or 70 cm, please post them into the aurora page using LOGIN, or send as a text file to pa3biy@mmmonvhf.de and pa2dw@mmmonvhf.de. The results of QSOs will be plotted on a map of Europe, and/or posted as lists of worked stations.

In order to produce an intersection map of the position of the Aurora cloud(s), we need reports from both stations who have been involved in a QSO, including an accurate beam heading. Please use LOGIN (please register), and file your list of QSOs by clicking: "Send your report" and follow the guidelines.

May 11 continued with the CMEs of May 10! The Aurora went on all night, collapsed a bit during the late morning, then went full fledged the whole afternoon with spectacular QSOs in CW and SSB across Europe! It was inspiring to notice that the CW AND SSB part of the 2 metre band were full of active hams!!

Very strong signals on 2m,but 70cm qsos are more rare for my location.
Best signal was G4ODA,and answer me on first call with my 80W/26el.
Hope soon again o the bands,GL

Very big AU.
Missed the first evening / night due to observation of visual Aurora. It was worth it. The Aurora was good visible in red and grey (due to light pollution) colors in northern Germany with naked eye. Never experienced that before. Aurora was bright red and green on the camera.
So I worked 2m AU only on the second afternoon on May 11th. Made also 6m and 10m AU QSOs in between the 2m operation. Great weekend.

Fantastic event and so nice to see high CW/SSB activity.
Missed Friday AU as was out looking at the visual Aurora, Licensed since 1978 and this is the first time to see a visual event. Amazed to work JN03 and JN04, thanks for the fb contacts. All CW except for one SSB.

Missed the Friday event as was out all evening, grrrr! But Saturday was good with plenty of SSB. Virtually all stations were auroral tone, even nearby ones. Similar spread of contacts to the big 2003 event(that was an X28 flare, I think). Also heard OE, another Italian I3QJZ JN55, an OZ, but nothing from SM/OH. I think the curtain was too far south. Pity it was daytime. Never seen an aurora. Maybe more to come in the next day or so. 73 Bob

First good Aurora event since 2003, even not so huge as previous one. Very clear signals, surprisingly, except for the 2 UK stns with extremely distorted and hard to understand modulations, probably due to bad aurora position. Hope for more to come before cycle 25 end!
No Au-signal on Friday here.

Comment:
My antenna was at 75 degrees for most of the opening as that seemed to produce the best results.

My keyer was stuck at a slightly too high rate to my liking, but I was not able to fix it at the spot. Next time (not in 20 years please!) I will try to run more moderate CW speeds as well!

Peter

Comment:
the best AU openning I remember, sadly I was busy with my other duties.
Decoded some Q65C and Q65D from EW and UA3.
I was heard by RZ6DD LN04MX 1943km 55A but due my noise I can't hear him.

Comment:
QTF either 0 (better for DL) or 330 (better for PA/G).
There is activity on 2m CW! just never in contests...

Signals way more stronger and stable then on May 10th.
Also worked 2 SSB, and 3 QSO ON 432.

Mostly on CQ, because at these low CW speeds (and everything repeated 4 times - why???) hunting in the band was extremely annoying.
